About this book

A sequel to The Raj Quartet, this novel follows Colonel Tusker and Lucy Smalley as they remain in the hills of Pankot after Indian independence strips them of their colonial status. Lucy, no longer willing to defer to her husband, asserts her own independence. Through their interactions, the novel explores class tensions among the British of the Raj era and examines the loneliness, rage, and persistent affection within their marriage. Staying On won the Booker Prize in 1977 and was adapted into a 1979 motion picture starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson.
