Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy medieval history but find traditional chronicles dry, because Lewis brings real human conflict to the political machinations.
  • You're interested in how power actually shifts hands, especially when neither side has a clear claim to legitimacy.
  • You appreciate history that challenges familiar narratives, since this reframes Matilda as principled rather than merely difficult.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want grand battles and military strategy, because this focuses on the political and social collapse instead.
  • You're looking for a character-driven narrative, since the book prioritizes historical analysis over intimate portraits.
  • You prefer books that take a single protagonist's side, because Lewis deliberately presents both Stephen and Matilda's perspectives fairly.

About this book

Stephen and Matilda's Civil War examines the twelfth-century struggle for the English throne between Matilda, daughter of Henry I, and her cousin Stephen of Blois, nephew of Henry I. Known as the Anarchy, this civil war lasted from 1135 to 1154 and marked the first major internal conflict in post-Conquest England. When Henry I died after losing his only legitimate son in a shipwreck, the barons had sworn to support Matilda as his heir. She was remarried to Geoffrey, Count of Anjou to strengthen her claim. However, Stephen of Blois moved quickly to claim the throne before Matilda could establish herself in England, following the precedent Henry I himself had set upon his brother William Rufus's death. With support from his brother Henry, Bishop of Winchester, Stephen initially secured his position. Matilda refused to abandon her birthright and sought to hold the barons to their oaths, triggering over a decade of warfare that fractured England. Matthew Lewis examines both sides of the conflict to understand the actions and motivations of the key figures, moving beyond traditional characterizations of Matilda as aloof and Stephen as ineffective. The war ultimately ended the Norman dynasty and led to the rise of the Plantagenet kings.
