About this book

Tall Water is a teen graphic novel by SJ Sindu and illustrator Dion MBD that follows Nimmi, a sixteen-year-old who travels to Sri Lanka to reconnect with her mother, whom she has never known. Her mother refused to leave the island during a war, even for Nimmi's sake. When Nimmi's father, a reporter, returns to Sri Lanka on assignment, he initially refuses to bring her, citing safety concerns. After her mother appears to her in a dream, Nimmi boards a plane anyway. Her father reluctantly helps her make contact with her mother once they arrive. In Sri Lanka, Nimmi accompanies her father and his guide through checkpoints and past armed soldiers as conflict continues around them. The day after Christmas, a tsunami devastates the island, leaving Nimmi stranded amid the destruction. Through her struggle to reunite with her mother in the aftermath, Nimmi discovers truths about herself. The book is an Asian/Pacific American Award Young Adult Literature Honor Book and a Stonewall Honor winner.
