  • You need fast-paced plots with high stakes and dramatic reveals rather than slow-burn emotional arcs.
  • You're looking for a coming-of-age story where the teen protagonist becomes bold and outgoing by the end.

About this book

Set in 1987, this novel follows fourteen-year-old June Elbus, whose closest relationship is with her uncle Finn Weiss, a renowned painter who serves as her godfather, confidant, and best friend. When Finn dies young from a mysterious illness, June's world is disrupted. At Finn's funeral, June notices a stranger named Toby lingering at the edges of the gathering. Days later, she receives a package containing a teapot from Finn's apartment and a note from Toby requesting to meet. As June and Toby spend time together, she discovers that Toby also grieves Finn's loss deeply. Through their unexpected friendship, June finds comfort and connection during a time of profound change. The novel explores themes of love, grief, and renewal between two unlikely friends. Winner of the Alex Award, it was named one of the best books of the year by multiple publications including The Wall Street Journal, O: The Oprah Magazine, BookPage, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, and School Library Journal.
