Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by Civil War history but tired of the same Grant and Lee narratives, and want to understand the generals who actually won the conflict.
  • You enjoy military biography that doesn't shy away from difficult moral questions, like how a ruthless tactician can also be a conservation pioneer.
  • You appreciate well-researched narratives that trace how nineteenth-century innovations in warfare shaped the entire twentieth century.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a hagiography rather than an honest reckoning with a man's contradictions and brutality.
  • You're looking for a light overview of the Civil War and expect Sheridan to be only a minor character.
  • You prefer fiction to biography, or you need a book that's more recent in its approach to American history.

About this book

Philip H. Sheridan ranks alongside Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman among the generals most responsible for Union victory in the Civil War, yet remains the least known of the three. Before Sherman's march through Georgia, Sheridan introduced scorched-earth warfare to the South. His Cavalry Corps played a decisive role in compelling Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Sheridan's innovative cavalry tactics and "total war" strategy influenced twentieth-century military doctrine. After the war, Sheridan suppressed raiding Plains Indians using similar methods—killing warriors and burning villages—as he had employed against the Confederates. He also defended reservation Indians from corrupt agents and contractors. As an enthusiastic hunter and conservationist, Sheridan later ordered the US cavalry to occupy and operate Yellowstone National Park to protect it from commercial exploitation.
