Perfect for you if...

  • You appreciate historical fiction that moves slowly and deliberately, trusting the reader to piece together what's being withheld.
  • You're drawn to stories about Hollywood's early era and the people erased from its official history.
  • You enjoy mysteries that operate on restraint rather than revelation, where the mood and secrets matter more than answers.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need plots that move quickly or mysteries that resolve neatly by the final chapter.
  • You prefer unreliable narrators who actively deceive you over ones who simply refuse to remember clearly.
  • You're looking for a love story where romantic tension drives the narrative forward.

About this book

Jun Nakayama was a silent film star in early Hollywood, but by 1964 lives in obscurity. A young writer named Nick Bellinger approaches him with a screenplay written with Nakayama in mind, intriguing him with the possibility of returning to film. However, Jun worries that renewed attention might expose the events that ended his career abruptly in 1922—events connected to shifting racial dynamics in California and the unsolved murder of his favorite director, Ashley Bennett Tyler. The Age of Dreaming combines historical fiction, mystery, and unrequited love. Nina Revoyr was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and Polish-American father, and grew up in Japan, Wisconsin, and Los Angeles. She is the author of two previous novels: The Necessary Hunger and Southland, which was a Book Sense 76 pick, winner of the Ferro-Grumley and Lambda Literary awards, a finalist for an Edgar Award, and one of the Los Angeles Times' Best Books of 2003. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
