Perfect for you if...

  • You love dual-timeline stories where the past illuminates the present, especially when they centre on ordinary people doing extraordinary things under impossible circumstances.
  • You're drawn to WWII fiction that focuses on resistance work and moral courage rather than battles, with real historical stakes woven throughout.
  • You appreciate character-driven narratives where the emotional weight of secrets matters as much as the plot itself.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced thrillers over character studies. This one moves deliberately, building tension through relationships rather than action sequences.
  • You're looking for romance as the central plot. Whilst there's a love interest, the story is fundamentally about survival and sacrifice, not passion.
  • You want standalone novels. This is book one in a series, and the frame narrative with Amy and Maureen's present-day conversation is ongoing.

About this book

New York, 2006. Amy Sullivan's life has fallen apart after losing her job at a prestigious newspaper. When her 90-year-old grandmother Maureen Ritter calls from the South of France, she travels to America ostensibly to visit her ailing sister. Instead, Maureen begins sharing a story she has kept hidden for over 60 years—the account of her experiences during World War II. France, 1940. As the German invasion looms, Maureen and the Jewish refugees sheltering with her in the French countryside face an uncertain future. During a trip to Paris to secure visas for their escape, she meets Christophe, an enigmatic man who hints at hidden knowledge. When he informs her of Jewish children in Belgium threatened by the Nazi Blitzkrieg, Maureen and Christophe organize a rescue operation. Following the Nazi occupation of northern France, Maureen must evacuate the Jewish orphans in her care. Working with the resistance and networks designed to help Allied servicemen escape, she embarks on a perilous mission to save those she loves, regardless of personal cost. This is the first novel in a new series.
