Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to lesser-known WWII stories, especially those centred on women whose contributions have been sidelined by conventional histories.
  • You care about art and cultural heritage, and want to understand how masterpieces survived the war and who fought to save them.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fiction over historical non-fiction, even when the true story reads as compellingly as a novel.
  • You're looking for a comprehensive military history of WWII rather than a focused portrait of one woman's undercover work.
  • You find detailed descriptions of theft, looting, and cultural destruction emotionally draining without counterbalance.

About this book

The Art Spy tells the true story of Rose Valland, a woman who worked at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris during World War II and became a key Resistance spy operating within the Nazi's art looting headquarters. Based on previously undiscovered documents, the book chronicles how Valland infiltrated Nazi leadership to prevent the theft of masterpieces while Hitler amassed stolen art for his planned Führermuseum. She met with Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, passed information to the Resistance, and faced danger during the liberation of Paris on August 25, 1944. The narrative also follows Alexandre Rosenberg, a young Free French soldier fighting with Allied forces to liberate France. His father was an art dealer for Picasso, Matisse, George Braque, and Fernand Léger, and the Nazis had seized the family's art collection, gallery, and home in Paris. The book moves from pre-war Paris—a center of modern culture—through the tension of Europe on the eve of war, to the Nazi occupation of France, depicting how individuals like Valland and Rosenberg risked their lives to resist.
