The Battle of Oriskany and General Nicholas Herkimer: Revolution in the Mohawk Valley

This book examines the Battle of Oriskany in August 1777 and General Nicholas Herkimer's role in the Continental army's victory over British forces under St. Leger in New York's Mohawk Valley. Though the battle did not result in relief of the British siege of Fort Stanwix, Herkimer's forces turned back the British advance and protected Washington's northern flank, allowing the Continental army to survive and fight the Battle of Saratoga the following month. Herkimer was mortally wounded in the battle but is regarded as a significant figure in the Revolutionary War.
