About this book

London, 1656. Oliver Cromwell holds power as a king in all but name. Three conspirators—an alliance of Royalists and disillusioned Parliamentarians—plot his assassination. Seeker, however, becomes focused on investigating the death of a man killed by a bear, creatures absent from the capital since bear baiting was banned. The hunt for the killer takes Seeker from Kent's coffee house on Cornhill to a German clockmaker in Clerkenwell, and finally to the desolate Lambeth Marshes, a dangerous place to venture after dark. As the murder's motivation emerges, Seeker discovers the true nature of his opponent: a skilled fighter sent from exile by the Royalists, determined to bring about the Restoration at any cost.
