Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to overlooked stories of women in wartime and want to hear directly from people who were actually there.
  • You've read other WWII histories but felt something was missing about the female experience and perspective.
  • You appreciate oral history done properly: individual voices, lived details, and the messy reality beneath the headlines.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a detailed technical breakdown of codebreaking itself, maths-heavy explanations, or Enigma machine specifics.
  • You prefer tightly plotted narrative history over character-driven memoir and ensemble storytelling.
  • You're looking for a comprehensive single-subject deep dive rather than a woven tapestry of fifteen different lives.

About this book

The Bletchley Girls presents the true accounts of fifteen women who worked at Bletchley Park, Britain's secret codebreaking center during World War Two. Tessa Dunlop met with and interviewed these veterans multiple times, weaving together their individual stories and voices. During the Second World War, approximately 7,000 women were selected from 8 million working women to work at Bletchley Park and its outstations. The female workforce eventually outnumbered men three to one. The women came from diverse backgrounds—including a Belgian refugee, a Scottish debutante, a Jewish teenager, and a factory worker from Northamptonshire. Their work was confusing, monotonous, and meticulous, involving night shifts hunched over papers and operating complex machines. They were bound by strict secrecy and could not discuss their roles. Through Dunlop's interviews, the book captures their experiences navigating war, secrecy, love, and loss.
