Perfect for you if...

  • You love Arthurian retellings but want something that centres the minor characters instead of the famous ones.
  • You've read The Magicians and want Grossman's distinctive blend of wit, magic, and emotional depth in a new setting.
  • You're drawn to fantasy that treats medieval legend seriously whilst still being fun and surprising.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a straightforward, reverent retelling of the Arthur mythology as it's traditionally told.
  • You prefer faster pacing. This is a character-driven novel that takes time to build its world.
  • You're looking for a romance. The relationships here matter, but this isn't a love story at its core.

About this book

A gifted young knight named Collum arrives at Camelot seeking a place at the Round Table, only to discover that King Arthur died two weeks earlier at the Battle of Camlann. Only a handful of Round Table knights remain. The survivors are not the legendary heroes like Lancelot or Gawain, but rather the oddballs of the Round Table: Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur's fool who was knighted as a joke. They are joined by Nimue, Merlin's former apprentice who turned against him and buried him under a hill. Together, this unlikely group must rebuild Camelot in a world losing its balance as God abandons Britain and fairies and old gods return, led by Morgan le Fay. They must reclaim Excalibur and restore the ruined world, but first must uncover why King Arthur fell. The novel features duels, quests, battles, tournaments, magic swords, and Fisher Kings, while exploring imperfect men and women of strength and pain attempting to reforge a broken land despite their own brokenness.
