Perfect for you if...

  • You love immersive medieval settings where the politics are as treacherous as the battlefields.
  • You appreciate protagonists who've earned their scars through previous books and face genuine moral weight in their choices.
  • You're after meaty historical fiction that treats medieval warfare and chivalry with real complexity, not romanticised nonsense.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer standalone novels and aren't keen on jumping into an established series mid-way.
  • You want lighter historical fiction without lengthy passages on military tactics and the grinding reality of medieval life.
  • You're looking for straightforward adventure without the philosophical questions about violence and redemption woven through.

About this book

The Captain of Venice continues the Chivalry series, which follows William Gold from his escape from London to join the Black Prince through campaigns in France, life as a routier and criminal, and eventual service with the Knights of Saint John and as a professional soldier and knight. The series explores life in the High Middle Ages while examining modern questions about violence in society, the rules of conflict and war, and the human cost of using violence. After an unpaid campaign for the Pope and involvement in conflicts between Venice and Genoa, William Gold contemplated leaving military service. However, news of a potential truce between France and England and the threat of Florence's uprising draw him back. An offer of captaincy from his former commander and the prospect of reuniting with a noblewoman from his previous campaign convince him to return to action.
