Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to WWII stories centred on ordinary people performing extraordinary acts of courage, especially lesser-known rescue missions.
  • You want historical fiction that balances heartbreak with hope, told through intimate family perspectives rather than grand narratives.
  • You appreciate novels where the emotional weight of impossible choices stays with you long after the final page.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with clear resolutions. this is character-driven and lingers in moral ambiguity.
  • You struggle with stories about wartime separation and loss of family members. the premise involves sustained grief and trauma.
  • You want lighter historical fiction without sustained emotional intensity. readers consistently note this is a tearjerker.

About this book

The Child at the Window follows two sisters, Josephine and Constance, who help Jewish people escape Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. As fascism rises across Europe, they begin smuggling possessions to finance refugees' new lives in London. They are then asked to rescue a young girl whose mother, Ilse, has been imprisoned for her journalism, and whose father Daniel believes letting her go is the only way to protect her. When war breaks out in 1939, the sisters work on the Home Front—Jo at the Ministry of Information as part of an intelligence network, and Constance as an air raid warden during the Blitz. Meanwhile, Ilse is moved to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she joins other women in documenting the atrocities they endure. The novel explores whether Ilse can find a way to reconnect with her daughter, drawing on the true story of how Jewish people escaped fascist Germany with help from extraordinary individuals.
