  • You're drawn to post-apocalyptic fiction where kids have to make impossible choices between survival and loyalty.
  • You appreciate morally complex characters, especially genetically modified soldiers caught between their creation and their humanity.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer lighter young adult adventure without graphic violence, torture, or the casual cruelty of a militarised society.
  • You need a clear redemption arc or happy ending. This novel prioritises realism over comfort.

About this book

In a dark future America marked by widespread violence, terror, and grief, young refugees Mahlia and Mouse have escaped the war-torn Drowned Cities and built a fragile life in the jungle outskirts. Their existence unravels when they encounter Tool, a wounded half-man bioengineered as a war beast, who is being hunted by a vengeful group of soldiers. When one of them is taken prisoner by the soldiers, the other faces an impossible choice: risk everything to save their friend, or flee to safety. The story explores themes of loyalty and survival as the characters navigate their circumstances.
