Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction rooted in real political upheaval but told through magical, intimate character moments rather than sweeping events.
  • You're drawn to stories where grief and loss drive the narrative, and where families fracture and rebuild across generations.
  • You appreciate translated literature that brings non-Western voices and perspectives into sharp focus, especially Persian storytelling traditions.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven narratives with clear resolutions; this is a slow, introspective novel about processing trauma and loss.
  • You want historical fiction that prioritises dates, political movements, and factual detail over emotional truth and family dynamics.
  • You're looking for an uplifting or hopeful read; this book sits firmly with heartbreak and the search for meaning amidst senseless tragedy.

About this book

A family flees Tehran after the Islamic Revolution when their home is burned by zealots, killing their thirteen-year-old daughter Bahar. They settle in a small village, hoping to preserve their intellectual freedom and lives, but become caught in the post-revolutionary chaos sweeping across Iran. Barah's mother embarks on a journey to find meaning following this tragedy. The novel explores how imagination provides power when confronted with cruelty, and how storytelling helps people make sense of trauma. Through its characters, the book juxtaposes the beauty of Persian culture with the brutality of an oppressive political regime, examining both the personal and historical dimensions of loss and survival during this period of upheaval.
