Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by American frontier history and want to know what happened to real people, not just the famous expedition itself.
  • You enjoy narrative nonfiction that follows multiple characters across decades of sweeping historical change.
  • You're interested in the lives of ordinary explorers and soldiers who shaped the nation but rarely get their own stories told.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a tight, focused biography of one or two people rather than a collection of interconnected lives.
  • You prefer pure adventure narratives without the messier complications of what came after the glory days.
  • You're looking for a comprehensive historical analysis with extensive scholarly apparatus rather than an engagingly written story.

About this book

The Lewis and Clark Expedition's story is well known, but the fates of its thirty-three members after 1806 remain less explored. The final corps member died in 1870, and in the decades between, these explorers witnessed major events in American history—the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the opening of the transcontinental railroad. Some corps members entered public office; two faced murder charges. Many continued to explore America's western frontier, unable to abandon the call of adventure. This book traces what happened to the men and one woman who helped open the American West, drawing on extensive research to document their diverse paths and legacies.
