Perfect for you if...

  • You love history that reads like a novel, with real people whose ambitions and egos drive actual change.
  • You're fascinated by the Renaissance and want to understand how Florence became the epicentre of art and ideas.
  • You appreciate stories about creative competition, where tension between talented people produces something greater than either could make alone.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a dry academic text. This is narrative history, not a scholarly treatise.
  • You're looking for a quick read. Walker's lush detail rewards patience but demands it.
  • You prefer fiction over fact. This is thoroughly researched history, not an imaginative retelling.

About this book

Paul Robert Walker examines the rivalry between Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti, two artists whose competitive drive shaped the Renaissance. Brunelleschi, a temperamental architect and inventor who rediscovered mathematical perspective techniques, designed the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. However, he was forced to share the commission with his rival, the sculptor Ghiberti. The dome stands as one of the Renaissance's most enduring symbols, equal to works by Leonardo and Michelangelo. Walker presents both artists as talented and passionate figures whose competition drove the completion of this magnificent structure and ignited the broader Renaissance movement. The narrative also features other significant figures of 15th-century Florence, including Donatello, Masaccio, Cosimo de'Medici, and Leon Battista Alberti, offering a portrait of the city during a period of flourishing creativity and genius.
