About this book

Stanislaw Lem sends his cosmonaut protagonist Ijon Tichy to the Eighth Futurological Congress in Costa Rica to discuss overpopulation. During a local revolution, Tichy is shot and critically wounded, then flashfrozen to await medical treatment. When he awakens in 2039, he discovers a future radically different from what the Congress had anticipated. In this future world, authorities administer psychochemicals to the population to make life bearable in a desperately overcrowded environment. Lem combines scientific speculation with satire to examine Earth's trajectory, presenting a vision that is both pessimistic and darkly humorous. The novel was translated by Michael Kandel.
