Perfect for you if...

  • You love dual-timeline stories that connect past trauma to present-day healing, especially when they centre ordinary people caught in historical events.
  • You're drawn to stories about Irish immigration and the human cost of survival, told through specific voices rather than broad sweeps.
  • You appreciate novels that weave historical fact with emotional truth, where the real impact of tragedy plays out across generations.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want action-driven Titanic fiction focused on the sinking itself rather than its psychological aftermath and long-term consequences.
  • You prefer standalone timelines and find dual narratives confusing or slow to get into.
  • You're looking for a gripping page-turner rather than a meditative exploration of silence, shame, and family secrets.

About this book

Inspired by true events, this novel tells the story of Irish emigrants aboard RMS Titanic, blending fact and fiction to explore the tragedy's impact on survivors and their descendants. In 1912, fourteen members of a small Irish village board the Titanic, seeking a better life in America. For seventeen-year-old Maggie Murphy, the journey is bittersweet—her future lies in an unknown new place, but her heart remains in Ireland with Séamus, her sweetheart. When disaster strikes, Maggie is among the few steerage passengers who survive. Waking alone in a New York hospital, she vows never to speak of that terrible night again. In 1982 Chicago, Grace Butler struggles with direction following her father's death. When her Great Nana Maggie reveals a painful family secret about the Titanic that she has kept for nearly a lifetime, the revelation gives Grace new direction. Through this dual timeline story, the revelation leads both women to unexpected reunions with those they believed were lost.
