Perfect for you if...

  • You want a memoir that doesn't wallow in darkness but instead explores how someone can choose gratitude even after losing everything to genocide.
  • You're looking for practical wisdom about resilience, kindness, and meaning from someone who's earned the right to share it through lived experience.
  • You appreciate straightforward storytelling over literary flourish, and you want to understand how an ordinary person survived extraordinary horrors.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're seeking a detailed historical account of the camps themselves. This is Eddie's personal story and philosophy, not a comprehensive Holocaust history.
  • You prefer books that examine systemic evil and institutional failure in depth. Eddie's focus is on individual choice and spirit, not analysis.
  • You're uncomfortable with inspirational narratives around trauma, or you believe survival stories can inadvertently diminish the scale of suffering.

About this book

Eddie Jaku was born in Leipzig, Germany, into a Jewish family. As a teenager, his life changed dramatically on November 9, 1938, during Kristallnacht, when he was beaten by SS thugs, arrested, and sent to a concentration camp. Over the next seven years, he endured unimaginable conditions in Buchenwald, Auschwitz, and on a forced death march during the Third Reich's final days. The Nazis took his family, friends, and country, but did not break his spirit. Against overwhelming odds, Eddie survived. Grateful for his life, he made a promise to smile every day in thanks and to honor the six million Jews murdered by Hitler. Now 100 years old, Eddie calls himself the happiest man on earth. In this memoir, he shares his wisdom on how he has lived his best possible life, reflecting on gratitude, tolerance, and kindness. He discusses friendship, family, health, ethics, love, and hatred, offering insights on how life can be beautiful if you choose to make it so. His story presents lessons on resilience, finding happiness despite suffering, and the transformative power of gratitude.
