Perfect for you if...

  • You want a rigorous, detailed account of WWII's most pivotal years without the mythology that surrounds them.
  • You're interested in how military overreach, economic weakness, and ideological obsession destroyed a regime from within.
  • You've read the first volume or other WWII histories and want a scholarly second opinion backed by serious research.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a narrative that romanticises military strategy or presents Hitler as a tactical genius.

  • You need a short, accessible introduction. This is a deep, comprehensive study that assumes some baseline knowledge.

About this book

The second volume of Frank McDonough's two-volume history of Germany under Hitler's Third Reich, covering 1940 to 1945 and concluding with Hitler's death and Germany's defeat. At the start of 1940, Germany appeared to be at the height of its power. By May 1945, Hitler was dead and Germany had suffered a disastrous defeat. McDonough argues that despite Hitler's ambitions and early military successes in Europe, Germany was only ever a middle-ranking power and could not ultimately prevail against the combined Allied forces. Hitler failed to achieve his goal of making Germany a superpower and left the German people to face the consequences of the Holocaust. This volume traces the dramatic reversal of fortune for the Third Reich and documents Germany's ultimate defeat.
