A single labor and delivery nurse unexpectedly becomes guardian of her cousin's three children. Facing a custody battle, she finds herself navigating guardianship hearings, parenting challenges, and responsibilities she never anticipated. When Hayes Carlisle—her best friend's older brother and the Chicago Colts' newest catcher—learns of her situation, he proposes a fake relationship. His reasoning: appearing together will improve his public image and demonstrate to the court that she is not raising the children alone. The arrangement seems practical, but complications arise. Hayes makes her laugh, treats their past kiss as meaningful rather than a mistake, and bonds with the children through bedtime stories. As her feelings deepen, she struggles to maintain the pretense of a relationship that was supposed to be temporary. Managing the demands of guardianship and fighting for custody of the children is difficult enough; resisting genuine feelings for Hayes proves to be the greatest challenge.
