The Hundred-Foot Journey: A Novel

Hassan Haji grows up above his grandfather's restaurant in Mumbai, where he develops a deep connection to food through spicy curries, market visits, and meals with his mother. When tragedy forces his family to leave India, they travel the world before settling in Lumière, a small village in the French Alps. The Haji family opens an inexpensive Indian restaurant directly across from a prestigious French establishment run by the renowned chef Madame Mallory. Their arrival transforms the quiet village with Indian spices and disrupts the local culinary landscape, creating tension with their celebrated neighbor. After an initial conflict, Madame Mallory agrees to mentor young Hassan, guiding him toward opening his own restaurant in Paris and new opportunities. The novel explores how the hundred-foot distance between the two kitchens represents the cultural and personal divides between different traditions and aspirations.
