Fighter pilot Jake Grafton struggles to find direction after combat operations in Vietnam end. Without a home to return to in the United States, he continues flying—piloting a Grumman A-6 Intruder from the deck of the U.S.S. Columbia in the South Pacific. His assignment involves training Marines in carrier-based flight operations, work made difficult by friction with Marine Captain Le Beau. When an unexpected enemy threat emerges, Grafton and Le Beau must overcome their conflicts and cooperate to protect everyone aboard the ship. The novel presents dangers from Soviet MiGs and Sumatran pirates as Grafton navigates some of the world's most challenging flying conditions.
