About this book

In 1941 Krakow, Lidia Sobieska finds an abandoned baby on her doorstep with a letter from the mother asking her to protect the child from the Nazis. Unable to have children of her own, Lidia names the baby Sophie and commits to raising her. As conditions worsen in Krakow and the nearby ghetto, Lidia adopts Eva Diamant, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl, enlisting help from a local priest to conceal both girls' identities and keep them safe. By 1946, the war has ended and Lidia believes her family is secure. A man named Adam Altman appears at her door claiming to be Sophie's biological father, with a story of survival and determination. He has searched for his daughter through the horrors of war. Lidia, having sacrificed everything to protect Sophie, refuses to surrender her daughter to a stranger and prepares to fight to keep her family intact. The novel explores themes of motherhood and courage during World War II.
