The Labors of Hercules Beal

Herc Beal is named after a mythical hero, but he's the smallest kid in his seventh-grade class at his new middle school. When his homeroom teacher assigns him to duplicate the mythical Hercules's twelve labors in real life, Herc is skeptical—there are no Nemean Lions or Hydras on Cape Cod, where he lives. Missing his parents and wishing his older brother spent more time with him, Herc begins taking steps along the path of his legendary namesake. New friends, both human and animal, soon help him. Though the mythical Hercules performed his labors alone, Herc discovers he may not have to face his challenges by himself. Set in Truro, the novel follows Herc as he trades battling mythical creatures for navigating seventh grade, impossible teachers, and feral cat colonies. Still grieving his parents' loss, Herc finds an unexpected path forward through his assignment and the community around him, including his tough-as-nails teacher, Lieutenant Colonel Hupfer, new classmates, and a one-eyed cat. Along the way, he learns about friendship, community, and his own strength.
