About this book

Based on the experience of real-life Auschwitz prisoner Dita Kraus, this novel tells the story of a girl who risked her life to preserve books during the Holocaust. Fourteen-year-old Dita is imprisoned by the Nazis at Auschwitz after being taken from the Terezín ghetto in Prague along with her mother and father. As she adjusts to life in the camp, Jewish leader Freddy Hirsch asks her to take charge of eight precious volumes that prisoners have smuggled past the guards. Dita accepts this responsibility and becomes the librarian of Auschwitz. The narrative draws from one of history's darkest periods to present a story of courage and hope.
