Perfect for you if...

  • You loved The Nightingale or other sweeping WWII romance and want that same blend of historical detail with genuine emotional stakes.
  • You're drawn to stories where women take active roles in espionage rather than waiting on the sidelines, especially when friendship is tested by competing loyalties.
  • You enjoy dual timelines or dual perspectives where contrasting characters (the bold one and the cautious one) push each other into situations neither expected.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer spy thrillers where romance is secondary; this book prioritises the love stories as central to the conflict, not a subplot.
  • You find detailed descriptions of 1940s ballrooms and social rituals tedious rather than atmospheric.
  • You want a straightforward, linear plot; this one layers multiple deceptions and requires you to track shifting allegiances.

About this book

In 1943 Lisbon, two American librarians, Selene Delmont and Beatrice Sullivan, are recruited by the U.S. Intelligence Office and sent to the Portuguese capital. Officially, they catalog Allied intelligence; secretly, they work as undercover agents infiltrating the Axis spy network in a city harboring exiled royalty, refugees, and spies. Selene is confident and independent, seeking escape from her family's expectations. Bea is cautious and bookish, recovering from heartbreak while trying to keep Selene safe. Both become entangled with two of Lisbon's most dangerous men: Luca Caldeira, an outcast Portuguese baron, and Gable, a lethal double-agent. As Selene navigates lavish ballrooms with Luca, Bea descends into Gable's shadowy world of informants. When an unexpected betrayal unravels their carefully constructed web of lies, the women face impossible choices between their missions and their hearts. Inspired by real historical figures, the novel explores whether their friendship and love can survive the cost of war.
