Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to historical fiction that centres real survival stories and want to understand the Holocaust through a young woman's unflinching perspective.
  • You appreciate narratives where victims reclaim agency and power, transforming trauma into purposeful action rather than remaining passive.
  • You value meticulously researched war stories that balance historical accuracy with emotional depth and don't shy away from the moral complexities of revenge.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer lighter historical fiction or need to avoid graphic depictions of atrocities and mass violence.
  • You're looking for stories where reconciliation and healing are the primary focus rather than justice through confrontation.
  • You struggle with narratives that span multiple traumatic settings (massacres, partisan warfare, concentration camps, displacement) across hundreds of pages.

About this book

Fourteen-year-old Rivka Resnik survives the massacre of her family in Lithuania during the Holocaust. She spends the remainder of the war fighting as a partisan against Nazi forces and is imprisoned in Auschwitz. After being rescued and sent to America, Rivka encounters the SS officer responsible for commanding the death squads that killed her family. Tom Reppert's novel follows Rivka's experiences across Europe and the United States during and after World War II. The narrative depicts her survival through the Holocaust, her transformation as she works with the underground, and her efforts to exact revenge. The story also explores the challenges faced by survivors rebuilding their lives in a new country, specifically New York City. While fictional, the novel incorporates historical detail about the Holocaust and its aftermath.
