Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical crime fiction set outside the usual European settings and want to see 1950s India brought to vivid life.
  • You're drawn to clever female detectives who actually feel like fully realised people, not just gender-swapped male archetypes.
  • You enjoy mysteries that layer personal stakes with larger social and political intrigue without feeling preachy.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced procedurals that don't linger on setting and atmosphere.
  • You want standalone mysteries rather than the start of a series that builds its world gradually.
  • You're looking for cosy mysteries in the traditional English village sense, without dark undertones or serious crimes.

About this book

Bombay, 1950. A white man's frozen body is discovered in the Himalayan foothills near Dehra Dun and becomes known as the Ice Man in media coverage. Inspector Persis Wadia and Metropolitan Police criminalist Archie Blackfinch investigate the case in Bombay, working to identify the victim, determine how long the body has been there, and uncover the circumstances of his death. Their investigation reveals a trail connected to the Ice Man that leads into a conspiracy. As they pursue this case, two additional murders occur in the city, raising the possibility of a serial killer targeting Europeans. The investigation unfolds against the backdrop of post-Independence Bombay.
