About this book

Quentin Coldwater is a brilliant but unhappy high school math prodigy who is secretly obsessed with a series of children's fantasy novels about a magical land called Fillory. When he is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, his dreams seem to come true. However, his newfound magical abilities lead him into hedonism and disillusionment, and he discovers a dark secret behind the Fillory story. The magical land proves far more dangerous than he imagined. The Magicians draws on conventions of contemporary and classic fantasy novels to subvert them, presenting a coming-of-age story set in a world of magic. It is the first book in a trilogy, followed by The Magician King and The Magician's Land.
