Perfect for you if...

  • You love sprawling sci-fi worlds where the rules are established clearly and then thoroughly explored, with alien races that feel genuinely alien rather than human with pointy ears.
  • You're drawn to ensemble casts of broken people finding purpose together, especially when they're outsiders and underdogs fighting against overwhelming odds.
  • You want the scope and world-building of Tolkien but set in Earth's deep past, with hard sci-fi concepts anchoring the fantasy elements.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer tight, fast-paced plots where every chapter moves the needle. This book takes time to build its world and explore its characters across 400+ pages.
  • You need clear-cut heroes and villains. The Tanu and Firvulag are morally complex, and some of your protagonists do questionable things to survive.
  • You're not interested in the premise once you've read it. If the setup doesn't grip you, the execution probably won't convert you either.

About this book

In 2034, French physicist Theo Quderian discovers a one-way time warp opening into the Rhone River valley during the Pliocene Epoch, six million years ago. Over time, misfits and mavericks from the future—many of them brilliant—begin using it as an exit from twenty-second-century life. In 2110, a group including a starship captain, athlete, paleontologist, and priest prepares to make the journey. Upon arriving in Pliocene Europe, the travelers discover the world is inhabited by two warring alien races: the Tanu, a handsome and arrogant race with psychokinetic and telepathic powers, and the Firvulag, a dwarfish race with their own supernatural abilities. Captured by the Tanu and transported across the primordial landscape, the humans escape, form an alliance with the forest-dwelling Firvulag, and launch an attack against the Tanu city on a river that would later become the Rhine. This is the first volume in a series about the exile world. The sequel, The Golden Torc, follows.
