Perfect for you if...

  • You loved Where the Crawdads Sing and want another atmospheric Southern novel with a teenage girl at the centre of family secrets and complex loyalties.
  • You appreciate character-driven stories where a protagonist's flaws and self-destructive choices feel earned rather than convenient.
  • You're interested in how rural working-class communities handle their histories, and how younger generations grapple with inherited burdens they didn't choose.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with constant action. This is a slow-burn exploration of grief and family trauma that takes its time.
  • You need clear resolutions to every thread. Some mysteries here unfold gradually, and acceptance matters more than complete answers.
  • You want a purely uplifting coming-of-age story. Jessie's journey involves real pain, destructive behaviour, and the messy work of growing up.

About this book

Set in 1960s North Carolina, The Moonshiner's Daughter follows sixteen-year-old Jessie Sasser, who wants to escape her family's past. Generations of Sassers have produced moonshine in the Brushy Mountains of Wilkes County, a history recorded in a leather-bound journal kept by Jessie's father. Jessie blames moonshining for her mother's death a dozen years earlier and refuses to accept this legacy. Jessie's father will not discuss her mother or the circumstances of her death. Desperate for answers, Jessie turns to destructive behaviors—particularly food—which a school nurse characterizes as feeding a "monster" inside her. Resenting her father's insistence that moonshining is in her blood, Jessie devises a plan to destroy the stills by framing their neighbors. The scheme backfires, escalating an old rivalry and exposing long-buried grudges. As Jessie attempts to correct both old and new wrongs, her conflicting loyalties lead her to unexpected truths about her family, her own strengths, and a legacy that may finally answer the questions she has been seeking.
