  • You want a sweeping multi-generational saga. This focuses tightly on Maria's relatively short life.

About this book

This biography examines Maria Branwell, a Cornish gentlewoman who met and fell in love with Patrick Brontë, a poor Irish curate, in Regency England. Despite their different backgrounds and social classes, they married and built a life together as devoted partners and parents during the industrial revolution. Their union produced six children, including Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë. The three daughters became renowned literary figures, authoring works including Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. They inherited their mother's intelligence and wit. Yet Maria herself has remained largely unknown while her family's fame spread worldwide. This biography brings her story to light for the first time, exploring her overlooked role in the Brontë legacy. Like her children, Maria's life was marked by untimely death, but not before she lived a significant story worthy of telling.
