About this book

After eight years in South Africa, Charles Knox returns to England as a wealthy man, hoping to leave his past behind. He is invited to Sissingham Hall, the Norfolk home of Sir Neville Strickland, where he encounters Rosamund, Sir Neville's wife and his former fiancée. The weekend offers Charles a chance to rebuild his social standing, but tensions quickly emerge. Rosamund still captivates him, Sir Neville appears troubled, and every guest harbors secrets. When Sir Neville is found dead in his study, suspicion falls on various members of the household. Charles teams with the perceptive Angela Marchmont to investigate the murder. As the inquiry progresses, old feelings and conflicting loyalties place Charles in danger, and he discovers that uncovering the truth may require significant personal cost. This is a 1920s country-house murder mystery set in traditional British detective fiction.
