Perfect for you if...

  • You care about how ordinary people get squeezed out by housing crises and want fiction that shows the human cost, not statistics.
  • You admire tight, propulsive storytelling that builds dread across a short timeframe without letting up.
  • You're drawn to characters who are fighting systems stacked against them and want to understand what desperation actually looks like.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need narrative closure and redemption arcs. Vlautin doesn't soften his endings or offer easy resolutions.
  • You prefer sprawling plots across years. This is intensely focused on 48 hours and won't satisfy readers wanting scope.
  • You read fiction to escape into brighter lives. This is bleak, relentless, and designed to make you uncomfortable.

About this book

Willy Vlautin's novel follows Lynette, a woman in her late twenties living in Portland with her mother and developmentally disabled brother Kenny. She has been working multiple jobs—some illegally—to save for a down payment on the house they currently rent. With Portland's housing prices having nearly quadrupled in fifteen years, she sees homeownership as their last chance for stability. She has enough for the down payment, but relies on her mother to cover the remaining asking price. A week before signing the loan papers, her mother withdraws her promise, forcing Lynette into a desperate search for funds. Set over two days and two nights, the novel follows Lynette's frantic odyssey as she encounters wealthy individuals and hustlers benefiting from and displaced by Portland's rapid transformation. As her desperation intensifies and her requests for help fail, she makes a dangerous choice that spirals into chaos. In attempting to secure her family's future, she confronts her past and the reality of her circumstances. The novel examines gentrification's impact on ordinary lives and explores questions about the price of urban change and the attainability of the American Dream for those living on society's margins.
