Perfect for you if...

  • You love spy thrillers grounded in real history, where the tradecraft and moral ambiguity matter more than explosions.
  • You appreciate understated prose that trusts readers to feel the tension without being told how to feel it.
  • You're drawn to WWII stories that focus on the unglamorous work of intelligence operatives rather than battlefield heroics.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want fast-paced action sequences and clear good-versus-evil morality.
  • You prefer contemporary settings where you don't need to recall European geography from a history book.
  • You're looking for a standalone novel, not the third book in a series (though it reads independently).

About this book

In September 1939, as Warsaw falls to Hitler's Wehrmacht, Captain Alexander de Milja is recruited by the Polish underground intelligence service. He is tasked with transporting the national gold reserve to safety via a refugee train bound for Bucharest. De Milja then operates across multiple locations and contexts: in the back alleys and black-market bistros of Paris, in the tenements of Warsaw, with partisan guerrillas in the frozen forests of Ukraine, and at Calais Harbor during a British bombing attack. Throughout, he engages in covert warfare in a world without rules, marked by danger, treachery, and betrayal.
