As the nations of Florin and Guilder approach war, Princess Buttercup faces a series of trials: she grieves the loss of her true love, is kidnapped by a mercenary and his associate, rescued by a pirate, forced into marriage with Prince Humperdinck, and rescued again by those who originally took her. Along the way, she encounters Vizzini, a criminal philosopher motivated by money; Fezzik, a gentle giant; Inigo, a Spaniard seeking revenge; and Count Rugen, the evil figure orchestrating events. Westley, Buttercup's true love and companion to a dangerous pirate, works to disrupt their plans and insert himself into their story.
