Perfect for you if...

  • You loved All the Light We Cannot See and want another deeply human story set in Nazi Germany with moral complexity at its heart.
  • You're drawn to characters who find courage through faith and quiet resistance rather than grand heroics.
  • You appreciate novels where ordinary people make extraordinary sacrifices, and the emotional cost matters as much as the historical stakes.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced thrillers over character-driven literary fiction with contemplative pacing.
  • You want clear heroes and villains rather than morally conflicted protagonists wrestling with impossible choices.
  • You're looking for romance as the main plot rather than a marriage of convenience that becomes something deeper.

About this book

Germany, 1942. Franciscan friar Anton Starzmann loses his position when the Nazis seize his school. He relocates to a small German hamlet and marries Elisabeth Herter, a widow seeking a husband in name only to help raise her three children. Anton hopes the marriage will provide atonement for his failure to protect his young students from Nazi persecution. Neither Anton nor Elisabeth anticipates how deeply war will affect their lives again. As Anton adjusts to being a husband and father, he learns of the Red Orchestra, an underground resistance network planning to assassinate Hitler. Despite Elisabeth's doubts, Anton joins the group. When the SS uncovers his involvement, Anton faces a final act of defiance that could cost him his life—and force him to leave behind the family he has grown to love.
