The River Has Roots

The River Has Roots is Amal El-Mohtar's solo debut novella. It won the Locus Award and was a finalist for the Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novella. The story follows the river Liss to the small town of Thistleford, located on the edge of Faerie, where two sisters live who cannot be separated, even in death. In Thistleford, the mysterious Hawthorn family tends and harvests enchanted willows, honoring an ancient compact by singing to the trees in thanks for their magic. Sisters Esther and Ysabel are particularly devoted to this tradition and deeply cherish each other. When Esther rejects a forceful suitor in favor of a lover from Faerie, both the sisters' bond and their lives are put at risk.
