About this book

In spring 1142, the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul faces a problem: a young widow named Perle has given her house to the abbey on the condition that she receives one white rose as rent by June 22, or the contract becomes void. When the rose finally blooms, a monk is sent to deliver the payment but is found murdered beside the damaged rosebush. Brother Cadfael, the abbey's herbalist, investigates by following the trail of bloodied petals. He recognizes that Perle's dowry is significantly larger with her house included, and she is likely to remarry. Before Cadfael can determine whether a greedy suitor committed the murder, a second crime occurs. The monk must now navigate through a complex web of circumstances to solve both crimes.
