About this book

The Sand-Reckoner reimagines the life of Archimedes, one of ancient Greece's greatest minds. The young scholar has spent three fulfilling years at Ptolemy's Museum in Alexandria, where he spent his days discussing ideas with the world's greatest thinkers. He must leave this life when his father falls ill and his home city of Syracuse enters war with Rome. Reluctant but obligated to return home, Archimedes takes work as a royal engineer building catapults. While Syracuse lacks Alexandria's intellectual resources, he discovers that life there offers more than he expected. He experiences fame and loss, love and war, wealth and betrayal. Yet none of these experiences affects him as profoundly as his passion for mathematics.
