The Seafort Saga Books 1–3: Midshipman's Hope, Challenger's Hope, and Prisoner's Hope

The Seafort Saga Books 1–3 collects the first three installments of David Feintuch's military science fiction series following Nicholas Seafort's journey through the galaxy. The trilogy has been described as "a splendid homage to the grand tradition of the old seafarer's tale." Midshipman's Hope is set in 2194. Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Seafort joins the United Nations Naval Service as a midshipman aboard the UNS Hibernia. When the ship responds to a distress call en route to the colony of Hope Nation, the senior command staff is lost in the rescue attempt. Seafort is elevated to a leadership position among resentful officers, and he faces a significant trial at Hope Nation. Challenger's Hope follows Captain Seafort after he is removed from command of the UNS Challenger and assigned to a smaller vessel, the UNS Portia, under Admiral Geoffrey Tremaine's task force. An alien attack devastates both ships, killing numerous crew and passengers. Seafort must regain command of the Challenger to bring survivors home. Prisoner's Hope concludes the trilogy as Seafort's failed mission has cost him greatly. With aliens still threatening the colony world of Hope Nation, Seafort must make a final sacrifice that constitutes an act of high treason.
