About this book

Soviet Union, 1956. Following Stalin's death, the regime begins to fracture. Khrushchev, Stalin's successor, distributes a secret speech declaring Stalin a tyrant and promising national change. The society that emerges is fractured: police have become criminals, and criminals are now considered innocent. Former state security officer Leo Demidov struggles with personal turmoil. The two young girls he and his wife Raisa adopted have not forgiven him for his role in their parents' deaths. With the truth now public, Leo, Raisa, and their family face grave danger from someone shaped by the dark legacy of Leo's past career—someone transformed into an instrument of vengeance. The narrative spans Moscow during political upheaval, the Siberian gulags, and Budapest during the Hungarian uprising, following a family attempting to overcome unimaginable obstacles to protect their loved ones while confronting how the sins of the past threaten the present.
