Perfect for you if...

  • You've felt the weight of impossible motherhood standards and want to read about women choosing their own paths.
  • You love character-driven fiction set in tight-knit communities where family secrets and old wounds matter.
  • You appreciated books about women finding themselves through honesty with each other, like *Remarkably Bright* or *The Four Winds*.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer plot-driven narratives with clear antagonists and resolutions rather than slow-burn family drama.
  • You're looking for light, feel-good reads without exploring trauma, grief, or complicated mother-daughter dynamics.
  • You want a book purely about cult recovery without the layered exploration of other family members' stories.

About this book

A novel about a young mother named Cass Simon who returns to her small-town Wisconsin home after leaving a cult-like "Mommune" and following an online mom-influencer. Uncertain about what motherhood means, she moves back with her family. Cass reunites with her mother Remy, who runs the Baumhaus supper club and struggles with old grief and the difficulty of letting go as she prepares to close the family business. Also present are Cass's sister Hilary, an artist and devoted mother whose recent divorce has undermined her confidence, and Erin, a sister-in-law navigating heartbreak while grappling with a pregnancy that both frightens and sustains her. Each Simon woman pursues her own approach to motherhood: Cass seeks to protect her children after trauma, Remy hopes to be a stable presence her daughters can return to, and her sisters work toward accepting imperfection. Set in a vibrant Wisconsin town, the novel explores forgiveness, family bonds and boundaries, and the personal journey of understanding what it means to be a good mother.
