Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in Black history and want to understand the people behind the icons, not just the icons themselves.
  • You're a mother or have a complicated relationship with your own mother and appreciate seeing motherhood examined with nuance and depth.
  • You read Ibram X. Kendi or Ta-Nehisi Coates and want more work that reframes American history through a lens that's often been ignored.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a traditional biography focused on a single central figure rather than interwoven stories of three women.
  • You're looking for a narrative that centres the famous sons rather than treating them as context for understanding their mothers' lives.
  • You prefer books that don't grapple with systemic racism and Jim Crow as foundational material.

About this book

The Three Mothers examines the lives of Berdis Baldwin, Alberta King, and Louise Little—the mothers of James Baldwin, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X. While extensive scholarship exists about these three pivotal figures, little has been written about the women who raised and shaped them. Born at the beginning of the 20th century, all three women navigated the prejudices of Jim Crow as Black women. Each employed distinct approaches to motherhood: Louise taught her children about their activist roots, Berdis encouraged James to express himself through writing, and Alberta grounded her lessons in faith and social justice. Despite facing severe discrimination, these mothers instilled in their sons a conviction that every human being deserves dignity and respect, and taught them resistance and a fundamental belief in Black people's worth. Their commitment to equal justice and dignity shaped some of America's most influential figures, though often at great cost to their families' safety. This work documents their individual stories and shared experiences as mothers, addressing a significant gap in historical documentation and honoring their contributions to American history.
