Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical figures who break the mould. Caterina ruled Italy's crossroads after her husband's murder, fought off invasions, and outlasted her enemies through sheer will.
  • You're drawn to stories about power and survival in brutal times. This is Renaissance politics without the Hollywood gloss: poisonings, strategic marriages, and kingdoms won and lost.
  • You appreciate carefully researched biography that reads like a novel. Lev builds Caterina's world with enough detail to make you feel the weight of her decisions without getting bogged down.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer stories where good triumphs cleanly. Caterina's life is messy, her victories partial, and her end bittersweet. There's no fairy-tale resolution here.
  • You want a straightforward women's empowerment narrative. Caterina was ruthless, ambitious, and sometimes compromised. She's not a modern hero transplanted to the past.
  • You're looking for a quick, breezy read. This is a serious historical biography that demands your attention and rewards it with real insight into Renaissance power dynamics.

About this book

Caterina Riario Sforza de' Medici was an Italian Renaissance noblewoman who served as a strategist, warrior, wife, and mother. Raised in the court of Milan and married at age ten to the pope's nephew, she became involved in Italy's political conflicts early in life. After years in Rome's papal court, she moved to the Romagnol province of Forlì. Following her husband's assassination, Caterina ruled Forlì with political skill and military strength. She eventually lost her lands to the Borgia family but mounted a resistance that gained attention across Europe. Her descendants, including Cosimo de' Medici, later rose to prominence. Elizabeth Lev's biography examines Caterina's life during the Italian Renaissance, portraying her as a ruler and a figure shaped by the violent and complex politics of her era.
