Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy science fiction that doubles as social commentary, using speculative worlds to interrogate class divisions and human nature.
  • You appreciate lean, propulsive storytelling that builds dread through vivid description rather than lengthy explanation.
  • You're curious about the origins of science fiction tropes and want to read the book that started it all, from the author who shaped the genre.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer character-driven narratives with deep emotional arcs; the Traveller remains largely enigmatic throughout.
  • You're looking for action-heavy plotting; this is a conceptual thought experiment with philosophical weight rather than constant adventure.
  • You want contemporary prose rhythms; Wells's Victorian style, though elegant, may feel distant and formal by today's standards.

About this book

An unnamed Time Traveller builds a machine that transports him to the year 802,701 AD. He encounters a world inhabited by two species: the Eloi, peaceful and childlike creatures living in massive, deteriorating structures, and the Morlocks, pale simian beings dwelling underground who hunt the Eloi. When the Traveller's machine is stolen, he must evade the Morlocks to recover it, eventually escaping by moving rapidly through time. He later witnesses Earth's final days on a frozen red beach thirty million years in the future. This novella by H. G. Wells was the first of his "scientific romances." It combines adventure with philosophical inquiry into progress and human mortality. The concept of time travel introduced here has influenced numerous subsequent writers, artists, and filmmakers. This ebook edition has been professionally proofread for accuracy and readability across devices.
