About this book

Ten-year-old Ada has spent her life confined to a one-room apartment because her mother is ashamed of her twisted foot. When her younger brother Jamie is evacuated from London during World War II, Ada seizes the opportunity to escape and follow him. Ada is taken in by Susan Smith, a woman reluctant to care for the two children. As Ada learns to ride a pony, teaches herself to read, and watches for German spies, she gradually begins to trust Susan. Susan, in turn, grows to love Ada and Jamie. The story follows whether their developing bond will survive the pressures of wartime, or if Ada and Jamie will be forced back into their mother's care. This historical fiction novel set during World War II explores themes of family, identity, and resilience. It is a Newbery Honor Book and winner of the Schneider Family Book Award.
